Mission:
The Minnesota Composting Council is the MN State Chapter of the United States Composting Council. As a state affiliate of the USCC, the MNCC is dedicated to the development, expansion, and promotion of the composting industry based upon sound science, principles of sustainability, and economic viability. The organization will achieve its mission by:
The Minnesota Composting Council received its non-profit status from the State of Minnesota in January 2013, and officially became the State Chapter of the United States Composting Council (USCC) in December 2013.
- Encouraging and guiding research
- Promoting best management practices
- Establishing standards
- Educating professionals and the public, and
- Enhancing product quality and markets.
The Minnesota Composting Council received its non-profit status from the State of Minnesota in January 2013, and officially became the State Chapter of the United States Composting Council (USCC) in December 2013.

MNCC Accomplishments
- Events:
- January workshop on commercial organics
- July Compost Operator Training (supported through a MPCA Environmental Assistance Grant)
- Legislative activities:
- Supported Governor's Bonding Bill funding to increase composting capacity
- Opposed auxiliary container bills (HF3606, SF3135)
- Education & Outreach:
- Plate to Garden Compost events held throughout Minnesota
- Promotion of International Compost Awareness Week
- Assistance from Carver County's MN GreenCorps Member in 2017 - 2018 and 2018 - 2019
- Applied for MPCA Environmental Assistance Grant to assist with Market Development work (will hear if awarded grant in Fall 2018)
- Industry Support:
- Updated letter that is sent to manufacturers, distributors and retailers regarding products with confusing or misleading labeling
- Partnering with MnDOT to understand how best to help expand compost use
- Partnering with MDA to educate composters on management of invasive species and noxious weed|
MNCC Board Members Receive Awards
Rufus Chaney Award
Congratulations go out to Marcus Zbinden for being awarded the US Composting Councils Rufus Chaney Award. The Award goes to an individual who has displayed excellence in the area of compost research over a period of a minimum of 10 years. This award recognizes those individuals whose breath of research and/or research findings have had a significant impact on the composting industry and/or end users of compost. When congratulated for receiving the award, Marcus said, "I appreciate the congratulations but the research was a team effort and it was only possible with the hard work of Tom Halbach, Anne Ludvik, Kellie Kish, Ginny Black and Tim Farnan, as well as, a bunch of money from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency" |
Hi-Kellog Award
Congratulations go out to Ginny Black for being awarded the USCC's Hi-Kellogg Award. The award is given to an individual who has displayed outstanding service to the US composting industry over a period of many years and recognizes individuals who have left a lasting positive impact on the US composting industry. Ginny said, "No one ever does anything alone. There are many friends and colleges who worked with me to move the industry forward"
