Biochar Initiatives in Minnesota
Tuesday, March 28 | 10-11:30 am
The MNCC presents local experts and practitioners in the production and use of biochar. Biochar is an age-old soil amendment which has received modern attention due to the potential for carbon-negative production and energy recovery or trucking reduction. When combined with compost, the best properties of both materials are realized in improving both nutrient and water holding properties of soil. Interest is growing in Minnesota for biochar production to manage excess wood wastes and create valuable soil amendments. We will hear from the City of Minneapolis who are nearing construction on a biochar facility as well as researchers at Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI) investigating the copious properties of biochar.
